we celebrated our son’s birthday yesterday. here’s a portrait of him that i painted two years ago. it is based on a photo taken on a family trip to london (that i have really fond memories of) when he was 13. yesterday he turned 20. watching your children turn into adults - getting to know them as adults - is a beautiful, sometimes weird or even challenging but on the whole deeply gratifying thing. thank you e. and m. and m. for being here.
